CHAPTER FIFTEEN

His Dance and Their Begrudging Truce

* * *

“When I said you need to be a little braver sometimes, Nora, this is not what I meant,” Leo said.

I fiddled with the candy wrapper in my hands, thankful I couldn’t hear the downpour inside the vent. After winning Fern over almost immediately and gaining Kai’s favor after tailoring to his goal as an ERS, I thought asking the twins would be a little easier. Of my Gifted classmates, these four were the only ones I could reasonably trust.

“It’ll be a simple recon mission. Nothing more, nothing less,” I attested. “This can prove we’re meant to be here and be on the Diviner task force.”

“You can’t attack a Senior Knight and then go behind his back,” Leo continued, gesturing to himself and his sister. “That’s something we would do in Norburn, and we’re not in Norburn anymore.”

I remained silent, watching the candle light. I tried piecing my words together.

As I did, Persephone slowly leaned toward her brother. “Leo.”

He refused to look at his sister for several seconds, shaking his head and keeping his nose in the air like Skylar. “Leo,” she repeated in a slower, haunted voice, “it’s a simple task. I’m going to say yes and you’ll have no choice.”

Leo’s shoulders slouched, exasperated. He waved his arms at her, the chaos bringing about a crescendo of wrappers.

Persephone straightened back to her sitting position with a smirk on her face before looking at me and nodding.

“We will help.” Leo pointed a finger up at his sister as if in warning. “But only when it comes to stealing Mr. Harris’s ID. We’ve come too far to do anything more to ruffle his feathers.”

“Thank you,” I breathed.

Confidence swelled within me—a new feeling that was becoming more and more frequent. Was this how Gifteds felt all the time?

“Then it’s settled.” I clapped my hands together. “Let’s go steal Mr. Harris’s ID!”

Prince Cassius, Persephone, and I all waited outside of Mr. Harris’s office during our lunch break.

“Remember,” Prince Cassius whispered, “keep your thoughts and emotions as blank as possible. He’s the First Senior Knight for a reason. Unlike other Feras, he’s just listed as one.”

“His animal isn’t specified?” Persephone asked.

The prince shook his head. “Could be a security measure, but I have a suspicion that he can read our emotions, so keep your feelings as completely neutral as possible whenever you’re close to him.”

I remembered when Mr. Harris’s emotions poured out and became my own when he was torturing Sylvia Douglas. Was she still alive below my feet? It wasn’t long ago that she held a Gifted below her feet.

I shook off my spiraling thoughts. “This cannot fail,” I said, looking at the two Gifteds between me. Prince Cassius and Persephone nodded.

The latch on the door snapped open, and Mr. Harris stepped out into the hallway. The three of us pressed ourselves against the wall behind the left-hand side corner, my hand tightening around Prince Cassius’s hand.

On cue, Leo walked out from the other side of the hallway away from us, walking toward Mr.
